Scientific Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution; the basic idea is to provide a distribution that universities, scientific institutions and researchers can rely on as a consistent data-collection and operations platform. Many of the names behind the project ought to be familiar to anyone who's skimmed the science pages: Fermilab , CERN and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters. The base of Scientific Linux distribution is basically Red Hat Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source. Generally, most of the changes are on a site-specific basis, e.g. customizations for Fermi's work as opposed to CERN. Visit Download section and Fermi Linux site. Note: only the Scientific Linux live page has moved to this new domain . |
