Fritzing - Version 0.3.18b is out

E-mail
Thursday, 15 April 2010 21:25

Fritzing can be seen as an Electronic Design Automation tool for non-engineers: the input metaphor is inspired by the environment of designers (the breadboard-based prototype), so that it is easy to transfer a hardware sketch to the software by using a drag-and-drop-based GUI to copy your sketchFritzing is an open-source initiative that allows you to virtually design electronic circuits on a breadboard (although you could design circuits that aren't on a breadboard). This could save a lot of hours working on a breadboard if you have this amazing software at hand. In this new version of Fritzing a high-level summary of changes are:

  • New basic parts: resonator, tantalum caps, multilayer caps, zener diode, schottky diode;
  • New microcontroller parts: Wiring (incl. Mini and USB Adapter), Parallax Propeller, Parallax Basic Stamps;
  • SMD footprint support (though still single-sided);
  • Import of gEDA footprints (through parts editor, plus 1,000 converted footprints available in parts/svg/contrib/pcb);
  • Speed-ups in breadboard dragging and inspector;
  • Visual distinction of plurals in parts bin;
  • Layers palette;
  • Mouse wheel can be set to either scroll or zoom.
But if you're interested in the detailed changes, take a look at the individual code changes clicking herehere.

Toped a C++ project, developed on GNU/Linux but cross-platform, IC layout editor supporting GDS and CIF formatsToped is a cross-platform IC layout editor supporting GDS and CIF formats. It is an open source project licensed under the GNU General Public License. The project is under active development. Toped focuses on rendering speed and quality of the screen output. The project uses the full power of OpenGL in terms of speed as well as unrestricted number of colors and fill patterns. In this new release (0.9.6, revision 1452) here is some changes:

  • * OASIS (Open Artwork Interchange Standard) import. The parser complies with SEMI P39-308 standard paper;
  • Calibre(c) DRC viewer;
  • Rendering properties including the image quality and text fonts can be manipulated by the user via modeless property dialogue box;
  • Save/restore a set of layer properties;
  • Number of stability improvements and bug fixes.

Paraview an open source software for scientific visualizationParaView is an open-source, multi-platform application designed to visualize data sets of size varying from small to very large, structured and unstructured, time varying and static. The goals of the ParaView project include developing an open-source, multi-platform visualization application that support distributed computational models to process large data sets. It has an open, flexible, and intuitive user interface. Furthermore, ParaView is built on an extensible architecture based on open standards. ParaView runs on distributed and shared memory parallel as well as single processor systems. The binaries and sources are available for download from the ParaView website. This release of Paraview includes several new features along with plenty of bug fixes addressing a multitude of usability and stability issues including those affecting parallel volume rendering and has many GUI usability improvements including, but definitely not limited to:

  • The plugin loading and management dialog was redesigned to make it easier to load plugins;
  • A couple of GPU-based rendering/visualization techniques have been incorporated along with GPU-based volume rendering support for 3D image volumes;
  • Greatly improved in terms of performance improvements for the first render time for datasets with large numbers of blocks;
  • AdaptiveParaView, a new experimental application developed using the ParaView application framework is also now available in source format.

Maxima is a  system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical expressions,  including differentiation, integration, Taylor series, Laplace  transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear  equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and tensorsMaxima is a symbolic computation program. It is full featured, doing symbolic manipulation of polynomials, matrices, rational functions, integration, Todd-coxeter, graphing, bigfloats. Maxima has a symbolic debugger source level debugger for maxima code. A new version, 5.21.0 stable, has been released. Some changes;

  • Correcting two typos;
  • In plot2d and plot3d: remove the axes labels when [box, false] is used;
  • Correcting the macros free-epsilonp and free-infp;
  • Use an offset in the hidden3d command, to allow the colors of the two sides of the surface to be set up with the color option of plot3d;
  • Changing the variable s2 to s1 at one place in the routine sminmax;
  • Replacing the variable s with the variable sgn in the routine unitcir.
